Project duration:
May 2022 - December 2022
Project Overview
The Problem:
Customers find themselves waiting for large amounts of time for meals when ordering To-Go in the restaurant.
The Goal:
To create an app that allows customers to online order and gives great estimated times for pick ups.
My Role:
UX Designer / UX Researcher creating an app for J’s Juke Joint.
Responsibilities:
Brainstorming, conducting interviews, wireframes, building lo-fi and hi-fi prototypes, completing usability studies, accessibility and iterating designs.
User Research: Summary
Customers have complained about the pick up time not being correct and quality of food due to not having the correct pick up time. When dining in the music within the restaurant is too loud to some attendees.
Correcting the app to give more step to the completion process has made the app able to give a more accurate pick up time, which also helps with the quality of the food when customer come to pick up. For our customers who love to dine in, we have turn down the music so that people can enjoy more conversations with each other and hopefully even help our waiters to hear better to make sure all request are accurate and understood.
User Research: Pain Points
Time
Pick up times may be incorrect
Accessibility
Does not function correctly all the time.
Quality
Food or drinks may be cold due to wrong pick up times.
Music
Music is too loud.
Persona: Jonathan King
Problem statement:
Jonathan King is a young, driven UX designer who needs timely service because he works long hours and needs his rest when off.
User Journey Map
Mapping King’s journey map shows how beneficial it would be to have an app for the Local Restaurant.
Paper Wireframes
I created a mobile app layout that is made for a family owned restaurant. for a family owned restaurant
Things needed on the app’s home screen consisted of:
Specials
Menu
Recent Orders (Favorites)
Digital Wireframes
I went with this design and layout after user research because it allows users to order quickly and delivers features many users were looking for.
The ‘Favorite Orders’ feature at the top makes it easier for users to order previous orders.
The ‘Specials’ feature allows users to know the specials we have that may save them MONEY!
The recent orders feature allows for users to quickly order what they’ve had before and have it prepared within minutes. Allowing for a great experience with the restaurant will minimal interaction.
Low-Fidelity Prototype
This lo-fi prototype shows the flow of family owned restaurant J’s Juke Joint and how you can order online.
Usability Study: Findings
Round 1 findings
Users want to add to Favorites Order
Users want to add more specials
Users want to add multiple orders
Round 2 findings
Users want to be able to create a new meal
Users want Specials Menu to be spelled out rather than just Specials
Mockups
For the first mock up, many loved the layout, but seem that Specials was probably the least option that people would use. Even though it is important to have, figured it may not need to be so high up on the page. Minor organization changes and it allows for the app to flow better.
Mockups
During the usability study, participants showed that they would like the decision to make a new meal, just in case they have never been to the restaurant, or they simply want a new meal rather than what they may have had before. Added a menu for entrée that gives users a chance to create a new meal.

High-Fidelity Prototype
The final high fidelity prototype delivers a smoother, cleaner user flows for ordering food online for pick up and checkout. It also allows users to create their own meals as well as select previous orders they have had before.

Accessibility Considerations
1.
For the high fidelity prototype, I made sure to give the user a better flowing app that meets their needs.
2.
The entrée, sides and desserts can now be selected and added to create a new order.
3.
Also the confirmation page delivers more details to make sure that the user has ordered the correct meal for their liking.
Takeaways
Impact:
Users were excited that the app moved as they assumed it would and it’s familiarity to other food apps made understanding it very easy.
Favorite Quote:
understands app very well, plus it runs like similar food apps which makes it very easy to use.
What I learned:
While creating this app, I learned to allow yourself to fall in love with finding solutions for people’s problems. Just because I think I may know what needs to be done, do not always mean that it’s the right solution for someone else's situation.
Next Steps
1.
Conduct a follow-up usability study before sending live.
2.
Checkout online reviews and see if it is any recommendations, or things we may have missed in the near future.
